EUGENE, Ore. – The sophomore finished within the top half of the field with a clearance of 17’8½”. Air Force sophomore Joey Uhle secured his second All-America award of the year, as he finished 11th in the pole vault this evening (June 5) at the 2013 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Uhle entered the competition at the opening height of 16’8¾”, clearing that bar on his second attempt. He also surpassed the next mark (17’2¾”) on his second chance, before clearing 17’8½” on his first try. Although the 17’8½” clearance took nine competitors out of the competition, Uhle easily bettered the bar on his opening pass. He attempted to surpass the 18-foot barrier for just the third time in his career, as the bar was raised to 18’0½”, but ended as one of eight vaulters to go out at that height. Uhle’s 17’8½” clearance matched the sixth-best height of the day for the 24-vaulter competition, with ties being broken by attempts. Mississippi sophomore Sam Kendricks won his first national title with a clearance of 18’8¾”, while Oral Roberts senior Jack Whitt took second at 18’6½”. Akron freshman Shawn Barber and Arkansas sophomore Andrew Irwin placed third and fourth, respectively, with matching clearances of 18’4½”, while BYU senior Victor Weirich rounded out the top five with a fifth-place clearance of 18’2½”. more
