Lavillenie seeks third consecutive European title in Zurich

After winning Olympic gold and breaking one of the most iconic world records on the books, the next major milestone on the road to global domination for Renaud Lavillenie is the European Athletics Championships. The flying French pole vaulter has a special reason for wanting to win his third straight European title in Zurich next month. “For me the Europeans are really important because I am on a good winning streak and if I win in Zurich it will be 20 in a row,” he said. “That’s a personal record for me, and it would be the perfect place to do it. The Europeans is a great competition so I’m really excited to be there.” Lavillenie’s first European title came in Barcelona four years ago. It was also his first gold medal at any outdoor championships and he went on to add a second European crown in Helsinki two years ago before claiming the Olympic title in London later that summer. This winter he stunned the whole sporting world when he cleared 6.16m at the All-Stars meeting in Donetsk, stealing Sergey Bubka’s 21-year-old world record from under the great man’s nose in his home country of Ukraine. It was the culmination of an extraordinary 2014 indoor season in which the 27-year-old vaulted 6m or higher five times and raised the French record three times in three competitions. But he missed the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Sopot with a foot injury, and so the Europeans in Zurich will be his first championship contest since he lost to Germany’s Raphael Holzdeppe at the Moscow World Championships last August. So far this outdoor season, Lavillenie has failed to hit the heights he achieved indoors. His world lead stands at 5.92 from Shanghai in May, but he has not gone over six metres yet.  more

Zoe Brown is forced to pull out of European Track and Field Championships

$

Zoe Brown has unfortunately had to withdraw from the European Track and Field Championships in Zurich due to injury. The Northern Ireland record holder for the pole vault received the injury while competing in her fourth Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Saturday. The pole vault event was held in torrential wind and rain and would have probably been cancelled if it had not been the Commonwealths. Zoe came in at a low height of 3.80 meters but with both the run up flooded and pole grip slippery was unfortunate to fail three times at what would normally have been her starting point in training. It is unfortunate for Zoe who has set no fewer than five Northern Ireland records this season culminating with 4.45 meters. She also scored two important victories over her Irish rival Tori Pena. It is hoped that Zoe and dedicated coach Jim Alexander will bounce back from their disappointment and return to set even higher standards.

Newham & Essex Beagles pole vaulter Steve Lewis has set his sights on further success at the European Championships, after claiming gold at the third time of asking at the Commonwealth Games.Lewis cleared 5.55m in Glasgow to record his first major title, but not without plenty of drama. The British record holder held his nerve in a tense jump-off with team-mate Luke Cutts to claim gold, after picking up bronze in the 2006 Commonwealth Games and silver four years later in Delhi. And after moving to the United States to focus his training, Lewis wants to repeat his Commonwealth display at the European Championships in Zurich, which start on Tuesday.“I think it’s a relief to get my first title, but I haven’t really processed it yet – it hasn’t really sunk in and I’ll have a lot of confidence going into the Europeans,” he said.“I’m pretty excited about it now and it’s a pretty open field. I don’t take too much notice of what others are jumping. Championships are about being a championship performer.”“I’ve been here a few times now and just to get the win feels so good and hopefully I can take that confidence forward now. This year I’ve settled down, I’ve got a new set-up in America and a base I can build off.”Beagles duo Christine Ohuruogu and Asha Philip added bronze medals in the relays as England topped the final medal table with 58 gold, 59 silver and 57 bronze. DENTON – Former North Texas standout pole vaulter and 1960 Olympian David Clark was named one of six 2015 inductees to the Texas Track and Field Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Clark, who finished third at the 1960 U.S. Olympic trials, became the first Texan to ever clear 15 feet, and reached a career-best of 15-feet 3-inches (4.65 meters) that year. He became the first North Texas student-athlete to compete in the Olympics.

While at North Texas, Clark broke the program’s pole vault record three times, and he was a two-time Missouri Valley Conference pole vault champion in 1959 and 1960. He was inducted into the North Texas Athletic Hall of Fame in 1988.

Clark joins former Mean Green track and field coaching legend Max Goldsmith as North Texas inductees to the TTFCA Hall of Fame. Goldsmith, who passed away in July, was a part of the inaugural class in 2010.

Pistorius told ‘snowball of lies,’ says prosecution

The main prosecutor in the trial of Oscar Pistorius has argued that the South African athlete cannot avoid a conviction for murdering his girlfriend. Gerrie Nel accused the athlete of being a “deceitful witness” who told the court a “snowball of lies”. Mr Pistorius denies murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. He says he mistook her for an intruder but the prosecution says he deliberately shot her after a row. Prosecutor Gerrie Nel made his concluding remarks on Thursday, with the defence due to follow on Friday. Known as the “Pitbull” prosecutor, Mr Nel said that even if Mr Pistorius’s account of  events were true, “he cannot escape” a conviction for murdering with intent. Ms Steenkamp was killed at Mr Pistorius’s home in South Africa’s capital, Pretoria, on 14 February last year. Mr Pistorius’s estranged father, Henke, was in the packed courtroom for the first time during the trial. It was also the first time that Barry Steenkamp, Reeva’s father, had attended. more

GARDNER, KAN.—The parade, the demolition derby, and the plethora of craft submissions from local 4H-ers have been staples at the Johnson County Fair for years. Now, it seems, Gardner-Edgerton’s Street Vault pole vaulting competition can be counted among the Fair’s traditions.  2014 marked the fifth edition of the event and some have indicated it might have been the best one yet, featuring over 50 competitors. Jordan Scott, former pole vaulting standout at the University of Kansas, was among them. Scott won seven individual Big 12 Championships between indoor and outdoor track and field in his time at Kansas. “I’ve been to many street vaults and Gardner was one of the best set-ups out there. The runway was solid, the mats were large, there was a great crowd, and it was held in conjunction with a fair, which is excellent,” said Scott, who won the 2013 USA Indoor Championships.  Scott, an Olympic hopeful, is not the Big 12 Champion to be featured in the event. Gardner-Edgerton alumni Kyle Wait (Kansas State University) and Casey Bowen (University of Kansas) have participated.  more

Delivering a jump of four meters in the Pole Vault Under-20 against his lone competitor, he brought home a gold medal.”To be honest, when I first heard about (Down Under Sports), I was excited and nervous at the same time,” Clark said. “As my time there progressed, I got a lot more comfortable.
