Top 15 sports achievement for 2013-14; No. 11 – Flores wins pole vault national championship

MESA, AZ – While it is almost common knowledge among Mesa athletic fans that two MCC teams won national championships during the 2013-14 year what may have slipped unnoticed was an individual national title in track and field. That is our No. 11 achievement for 2013-14.

Mesa had the great fortune of hosting the NJCAA Track and Field national championship this past spring and MCC’s own Jacob Flores (So., Tempe, AZ/Seton Catholic H.S.) won first place in the pole vaulting competition.Flores’ jump of 15-11 on his first attempt proved to be enough to capture the top spot.   After passing at the opening height, he cleared the bar four straight times as heights were increased. Flores then was unable to clear at 16-2 3/4 and watched intently as his top competitor, Bo Hadddock of Paradise Valley also missed. Haddock, however, had missed twice at lower heights. When Haddock hit the bar on his final try Flores leaped in the air, celebrating his title.

This makes the second straight national championship in the pole vault for the T-Birds, last year being won by Pau Tonnesen. In 2010, Robbie Haynie also won the pole vault title for the T-Birds.

Athletics Australia (AA) head coach Eric Hollingsworth has had his accreditation revoked and will be sent home from Glasgow 2014 as the fall-out of his public criticism of the country’s most high profile athlete, Olympic 100 metre hurdles champion Sally Pearson, continues.

This follows the English-born coach claiming Pearson, who is team captain of the Australian team here in Glasgow, set a bad example for the rest of the squad by failing to attend the team’s pre-Games camp in Gateshead, and to instead race at the Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games in London.

Later in the day, AA President David Grace condemned Hollingsworth for the fact he said anything, for what he said about Person in particular, and for the timing of what he said.

Grace said Hollingsworth had defied specific instructions by choosing to issue a media release through a public relations advisor.

The coach was consequently suspended without pay.  more

Luke Cutts is set to make his 2014 Commonwealth Games bow today as the Pole Vault Finals get underway, writes James Marshall.

Thurnscoe-born Cutts (pictured), who broke the British indoor record in January, will be going for gold this evening in Glasgow after an impressive showing in recent competitions. With the Commonwealth Pole Vault event now consisting of a final round only with no preliminary rounds, the Dearne Athletics Club star has been able to complete his preparations locally, before making yesterday’s trip north of the boarder. The Games will see the 26-year-old go up against his Stoke-based rival Steve Lewis, and after posting a seasons-best score two weeks ago at Sainsbury’s London Anniversary Games, Cutts believes an English clean sweep of the medals is achievable.

Box Hill’s Joel Pocklington’s social media surprise

Box Hill’s Joel Pocklington is the first to admit he’s not social media-savvy.

It’s why he was surprised to find out that he had a significant presence on Twitter.

Shortly before the Commonwealth Games kicked off, an account bearing the name ‘Pocklington’s Pole’ (@ThePoleOfficial) surfaced – and it is has since gone on to land more than 560 followers.

The pole account has produced such gems as: “Bad flight over, squeezed in with some rowdy beach fishing rods on an end of season trip!” and a plea to be rooming with the Russian pole-vaulting Parnov sisters Liza and Vicky.

STEVE Hooker has quit his duties as a commentator for Commonwealth Games broadcaster Channel Ten and is returning to Melbourne to support his wife.  Katya Kostetskaya, a Russian middle-distance runner who married Hooker in 2012, has been banned from competition for two years by the World Anti-Doping Agency for using prohibited drugs. The news came as a shock to the Australian pole vault champion when it broke yesterday. He has since left GlasgowHooker wasn’t aware of the information prior to it being logged on the anti-doping agency’s website.Despite losing their highly regarded athletics commentator, Channel Ten is being supportive of Hooker’s decision to leave the Games early. The network has announced that former Canadian world record holder and Olympic gold medal winner Donovan Bailey will join their commentary team for the remainder of the Games.“Steve’s priority is his family and he has left Glasgow to be with his wife, Ekaterina, and son Maxim. He has delivered brilliant commentary for the Games, and Network Ten fully supports his decision,” read the statement from Ten.Kostetskaya has been suspended until January next year for the “use/attempted use of a prohibited substance/method”, the World Anti-Doping Agency’s website says. The runner’s offence apparently took place on August 30, 2011 — coinciding with her fifth placing in the 800m final at the world championships in Daegu.Kostetskaya and the now-retired Hooker, an Olympic and world pole vault champion, met at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

PV: Rare Double for Kendricks

Jumping at a facility where crosswinds can be a problem, the 18-foot vaulter field shank quickly, with 5 men failing at the opening height of 17-8 1/2 (5.40) and another six missing 18-0 1/2 (5.50). Only 3 cleared 18-4 1/2 (5.60), including BYU alum Victor Weirich, whose clearance was a PR, but not including American Record holder and 5 time champion Brad Walker.  In the end, though, it was a duel between Sam Kendricks and Mark Hollis.  They both cleared 18-8 1/4 (5.70), but Kendricks led with fewer prior misses.  He clinched things by clearing 18-10 1/4 (5.75) on his third try.  He then made 2 attempts at a PR 19-1 (5.82) before calling it a day.  With his victory, Kendricks concluded his outdoor season unbeaten, and he became the first to win NCAA and USATF titles in the same year since Lawrence Johnson in 1996.  “I’m ecstatic right now,” said the Ole Miss junior, 21. “This is such an awesome experience. After the NCAA championships, I just wanted to come out here and jump and to be with these guys I looked up to.  It’s incredible.” Kendricks, an ROTC member, was due to report to Ft. Hood for army cadet training a week later.

It didn’t take very many vaults for Jenn Suhr to pick up overall national title number 15 (8 outdoors, 7 Indoors).  That left her just 1 or 2 behind local hero Stacy Dragila—who got a warm welcome here for an infield appearance–who won 16 (8/8) plus another outdoor when the event didn’t have a full “championship status”.  As befits her status as the second highest vaulter in history, Suhr didn’t even enter the competition and it was all but over.  On a day when strong winds were nobody’s friend, 6 of the 19 entrants no heighted and only 4 were left at the third height of the afternoon 14-11 (4.55).  At that point, Sandy Morris of Arkansas was in the lead having made 14-7 1/4 (4.45) on her first attempt, while Becky Holliday had needed  two and Kaitlin Petrillose three.  Suhr had yet to jump, but as the first of the quartet in the order, she instantly applied maximal pressure with an easy first time make.  Morris’s PR clearance matched that but the other two went out.  At 15-1 (4.60), Suhr again sailed over, and a second PR was beyond Morris, so the title was settled.  The perennial champ then missed three at a world leading 15-9 3/4 (4.82).  “I’m happy with this win,” she said. “Each title has its own specialness.  Now we go back and start training and get ready for our series in Europe.  I think any time you can make bars on your first few attempts and walk away without an injury.  It’s a good meet  — by Roy Conrad

Curran casualty of pole vault carnage

Olivia Curran had to contend with some atrocious conditions as she contested Saturday evening’s Commonwealth Games women’s pole vault final at Hampden Park.In at times torrential downpours, the 23-year-old attempted to jump 3.80 metres, but along with five of the other athletes in the 10-woman field she failed to negotiate the bar as the weather took its toll.Australian gold medal favourite Alana Boyd mastered the slippery and soaking runway the best winning with a vault of 4.50m. Welshwoman Sally Peake came second with Alysha Newman (Canada) and Sally Scott (England) joint bronze medallist after clearing the 3.80m mark.A positive Curran after said that the ‘carnage’ of the evening hadn’t put her off competing at that she’d definitely be back in the future.

Glasgow 2014: Disappointment for Zoe Brown

Northern Ireland medal hope Zoe Brown suffered huge disappointment in the women’s pole vault at the Commonwealth Games as she failed to register a height in rain-lashed conditions.

The competition was held in horrendous conditions and the Antrim woman failed with three attempts at 3.80m.

Five of the 10 competitors failed at the same height.

Australian Alana Boyd cleared 4.50m to take the gold medal, with Sally Peake from Wales securing silver with 4.25m.

Persistent heavy rain made the surface treacherous for the final night of athletics action at the Games and the pole vault competition was delayed by 45 minutes as officials attempted to clear surface water.

Brown went into the event with genuine medal hopes as she had set the second best height this season of the 10 competitors with a mark of 4.45m.

The 30-year-old was unable to hide her disappointment after missing out on probably the best opportunity she will ever have to win a major championship medal.

“The warm up was very difficult and I took a few spills which affected my confidence,” said the Antrim woman more

Bristol’s pole vaulting star Lucy Bryan rising above advertisy

At 19, Lucy Bryan is rated number three among Britain’s female pole vaulters and is the top-ranked U20. It’s an event that requires great strength and a fearless attitude, so I’m expecting a steely character.Instead, a tall, willowy figure breezes through the door, all smiles and warmth; she is charming, chatty, relaxed and absolutely laid-back.This is a young lady who takes everything in her stride, even shrugging off a serious back injury that will keep her out of full training until at least the new year. The timing couldn’t be much worse, since the stress fracture put paid to her chances of competing at either the Commonwealth Games or the World Junior Championships this summer. But she’s typically philosophical: “These things happen. It’s an injury and everyone gets them. It’s not good, but a stress fracture is common in pole vaulters. When you take off, your back hyper-extends and I’ve been doing that for five years straight.”I’ve had three weeks complete rest with no exercise and I’ve got two more to go. After that I can do some core work, but I can’t vault until Christmas at the earliest, so it’s a bit boring at the moment,” she says with a shrug.

UCLA begins recovery from flooding

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The famed hardwood court at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion will be replaced because of damage caused when 20 million gallons of water cascaded onto campus from a broken water main, the school announced Friday. In addition, the university began removing hundreds of cars that were swamped in underground parking structures.Athletic Director Dan Guerrero said in a statement that the entire floor at Pauley will be replaced by the end of October, and no regular season basketball games would be affected. No details were provided on the cost of replacing the floor.Pauley Pavilion underwent a $136 million upgrade just two years ago.New flooring also will be installed at the Hall of Fame at the J.D. Morgan Center and at a court in the John Wooden Center that is used for women’s volleyball games, Guerrero said. The announcement came as the university continued to clean up the mucky mess that occurred Tuesday when a century-old pipe broke on nearby Sunset Boulevard. The amount of water released represented about 4 percent of the total used by the entire city on an average day and occurred in the midst of an epic state drought.Elsewhere on campus, a parade of tow trucks removed about 400 vehicles that were submerged in the deluge, UCLA spokesman Tod Tamberg said. The process could take several days because workers were still pumping out water and digging through muck and debris.About 270 cars not damaged by water were removed earlier, and made available to owners.UCLA officials said six facilities were damaged in the flooding. Two — the Arthur Ashe Student Health and Wellness Center and the Drake Track and Field Stadium — were reopened Thursday, Tamberg said.At the site of the broken main, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power crews cut away 66 feet of the damaged steel pipe. The ruptured section will be sent to DWP corrosion experts for analysis. The Y-shaped junction will be replaced with a T-shaped connector for three pipes that will have extra steel plating to protect the joint. Crews were preparing two, 36-inch-diameter butterfly valves, each weighing two tons, as part of the repairs, a DWP statement said. The repairs were expected to continue through Friday or early Saturday, with work then beginning to repair a gaping hole in the heavily traveled street.

Adelaide, Australia –FORMER world pole vault champion Dmitri Markov knows a few footy rules.  “I know if it’s a goal it’s six points,” he says.Beyond that it’s all a bit of a mystery. But the 2006 Commonwealth Games silver medalist is gradually learning more about the game as his son, Oleg, emerges on the AFL radar.Oleg, 18, has shunned athletics — the sport in which his dad won the world title in Canada in 2001 — to become a utility for North Adelaide. He is among 15 Croweaters who have been invited to the AFL draft combine in Melbourne to be scrutinised and tested by club recruiters next month.“He’s got lots of talent,” Dmitri says.“We didn’t plan for Oleg to become an athlete — we didn’t push him into any sport.“(Footy) is good fun, a good game, lots of action.“Being in a big sport is something different and not everyone can make it.“But I’m already proud of him.” more

United Kingdom –Box Hill’s Joel Pocklington was the first man to jump in the men’s pole vault on Friday night, clearing 5.2 metres. He finished seventh.

With a personal and season best of 5.41m, Pocklington admitted medals would be a stretch, and he finished behind the English pair of Steven Lewis (gold) and Luke Cutts (silver), both of whom cleared 5.55m.

‘Pocklington’s Pole’ tweeted “Great experience for Joel. Out-poled today. Back to the tricks now!”

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – It seems no jump is too high for FPD freshman pole vaulter Carson Dingler.

Here lately, record-setting jumps have been no problem.

At the Amateur Athletics Union (AAU) Junior Olympics last weekend in Des Moines, Iowa, Dingler jumped 12 feet, 7 inches to set an all-time meet record.  A week earlier at the USA Track and Field (USATF) Junior Olympics in Humble, Texas, she jumped even higher: 12 feet, 7.5 inches. That jump also set an all-time meet record.

Dingler is ranked as the best high school freshman in America
