LAKEWOOD, Ohio – St. Edward’s sprinter and hurdler 6-5, 190
Steele Wasik has chosen to continue his track and field career at UCLA. Wasik announced his decision Monday, one week after completing his college visits. He also went to Arkansas, Notre Dame and Stanford. St. Edward assistant track coach Mike Young, also Wasik’s club coach, helped him reach his decision. He urged Wasik to select the college he liked from a student standpoint. “For me that was UCLA,” Wasik said. He’s looking to study business with a minor in film. “What it came down to was the best school with the best business program with a really great track team,” Wasik said. The fact that UCLA’s Westwood campus isn’t too far from Hollywood didn’t hurt either. A member of St. Edward’s inaugural International Baccalaureate diploma program, Wasik holds a 4.0 grade-point average. Ohio State, Kentucky, Oregon and Duke also were recruiting Wasik. Wasik led the Eagles to the Division I state title last June, a few months after the Eagles won the indoor championship. He was a member of the 2012 state champion 4×100-meter relay team and this past year at state placed second in the 110 and 300 hurdles. In July, Wasik won the decathlon at the AAU Junior Olympic Games at Eastern Michigan. He was chosen as the Joel Farrell Outstanding Performance Memorial Award winner. “All the trophies and medals are great,” Wasik said. “After the season I have all my medals out, but as soon as training starts, I clear my medals and put them in a drawer, I take down all the (newspaper) clippings on the fridge that my mom puts up. It’s a new season. Just because I did something last year doesn’t mean I will this year.”
