With the British Athletics Championships taking place in Birmingham this weekend, we caught up with pole vaulter Holly Bleasdale and asked her to assess the potential highlights of what is sure to be a high quality meet.

Bleasdale herself won’t be in action having taken the decision not to compete this season as a precautionary measure following an injury that forced her to miss out most of the 2013 outdoor campaign.

However, having been involved with the GB set-up for the past five years, the 22-year-old Sky Academy Sports Scholar is fantastically placed to provide an insight into where the most intriguing battles are set to be at the Alexander Stadium.

Men’s Pole Vault

There may not be as many genuine title hopefuls but a two-way tussle between Steven Lewis and Luke Cutts in the men’s pole vault could be as intriguing as any of the battles on show at Alexander Stadium.

The duo have been GB’s leading male vaulters for a number of years now and with both men finding some consistently good form so far this year, a face-off at the British Championships will be tough to call.

Cutts registered a personal best of 5.83m during the indoor season but has competed just once outdoors in 2014 whereas Lewis had no indoor season to speak of but has kept himself busy with a number of outdoor competitions since April. Whether that will give Lewis the edge though, remains to be seen.
