The second practice of the season saw an increase of the number of vaulters to 16, with four returning vaulters. Will lead everyone in high bar drills: figure 4, swing and some tried bubkas. Next came a box sand drill that turned out to be too advanced for most of the beginners. Then on to walking plants on the football field. Finally, some runway fun. Practice ended about 5:30

- What we have learned – how to hold a pole…how to run with a pole…the need for a jump and a swing…importance of step…to push the pole…keep it moving forward into the pit
- To go higher: Run faster so you can hold higher
- Today: to get a good step for 3 and five lefts; then use on runway
Beginners
Goal: Getting a 3 step and a 5 step
- Pair up on the track with measuring tape outstretched.
- Hold about three hand holds above arm stretch
- One vaulter runs three lefts counting…planting on the third left
- Count out loud or in your head … the lefts
- Other vaulter catches the third left and determines step length
- Do three times with each vaulter – remember or write down length
- Repeat with 5 strides
Runway – first three stride for a few; then 5 stride
Will and Tyler
Goal: Tyler – clean up technique. Will: work on meet prep for Sunday meet
Full runs or (4 step) bungee up…working of technique
Tomorrow: pole selection…pull out all poles and swing drills
