CENTRAL VALLEY Orange County, New York.— Samantha Beyar, a member of the Monroe-Woodbury Girls Varsity Track and Field team coached by Bill Mpasiakos, is the “Athlete of the Week” for the period ending Jan. 24. Samantha, a junior, has been a member of the Girls Varsity Track and Field program for four years. She runs sprints in addition to participating in the pole vault, long jump (she is the leading long jumper on the team) and the triple jump. In his press release announcing the selection, Monroe-Woodbury Athletic Director Ron Montalto wrote: “A wonderfully talented and intelligent young lady, Samantha continues to improve in every meet she participates in. The event she has excelled in the most this season is the pole vault.” She has scored in each meet she has attended this season: She placed second in the pole vault with a of 10’6” at the Jim Mitchell Invitational. She was then sixth with a vault of 9’6″ at the Bishop Loughlin. She placed first with a jump of 10’6″ at the North Shore Invitational. Samantha placed second with a jump of 10’0” at the Pearl River Holiday meet. She was first at the Stanner Games with a jump of 10’8” (personal best). Samantha went on to place first at the OCIAA meet with a personal best jump of 11’3.” She then placed second at the Suffern Invitational with a jump of 11’0”. “Samantha always wants to improve in all her events and her work ethic and drive have never been better,” Montalto wrote. “The coaching staff is very proud of her as they look forward to her leading the team to success in the counties and sections, as well as Samantha’s goal of reaching her first state meet.
