LAS VEGAS —  Wooster junior Alexis Romero went into the state track and field championships Saturday hoping to improve on her personal best height in the pole vault of 12 feet, 1 inch. But Romero soared higher than she ever had — and anyone else in state meet history had, for that matter — as she won the Division I girls pole vault at 12-7.25 at Silverado High. “My first goal was to win,” Romero said. “Then, I wanted to beat my personal record, so I did both of those. I wasn’t expecting to get the state record. But I was really relaxed today, and I wasn’t thinking a lot. That helped.  After I got the PR, I thought, ‘Well, it’d be nice to get the state record.’ And I did and I was really happy.” Romero tried to clear 12-9 after eclipsing the prior mark of 12-7 set in 1997, but fell just short. Romero’s record-setting performance offset an otherwise off day for North teams in Division I competition.  more
