GREAT Britain’s best ever pole vaulter Steve Lewis has been named The Sentinel/City of Stoke-on-Trent Male Sports Personality of the Year for a third time. The 27-year-old was honored for his greatest season when England cricketer Danielle Wyatt received the female award. Lewis, from Light Oaks, literally reached new heights in 2012 as he vaulted his personal best and higher than anyone in the country has ever previously managed. The former Holden Lane student went on to challenge for a medal at the Olympics, as France’s Renaud Lavillenie took gold with an new competition record. However, his momentous achievements – which also won him the Senior Individual award for a record fifth time – were tinged by great personal tragedy. His mum Linda Lewis died aged just 57 in October, following a short battle against cancer. She had fought her illness in secret while he had competed in London, when she had watched with pride from the stands sitting with husband Martin.
