FRENCHTOWN – The first time David Diehl competed in the pole vault, he was a 5-foot-11 freshman who couldn’t get bend on the pole. He cleared 9 feet, 6 inches, and for about a year and a half that’s all the higher he got. Last Friday at the Northwestern A Divisional in Whitefish, Diehl did a little bit better. After a discouraging warmup – he landed outside the pit once – Diehl cleared 14 feet. That’s the best mark heading into the State A track and field championships that begin Friday in Laurel. Diehl, along with high jumper Matt Hayes, gives Frenchtown the potential for big points. more
