Scott Greenman was once a wide-eye kid in the crowd, watching with amazement as some of the top pole vaulters in the nation raced down Pollasky Avenue and sailed over the bar onto the pit in the middle of Fourth Street in Old Town Clovis. He’s also a three-time high school competitor in the North American Pole Vaulting Championships. But Friday, the former Clovis High standout returned from a triumphant freshman season at the University of Sioux Falls in South Dakota as one of four elite men in the 19th annual event also dubbed the Clovis Street Vault. “I used to love coming here to watch this event, and it’s an honor to come here and vault,” Greenman said. “(Event director) Bob Fraley and the NAPVA do an amazing job with this. It’s something that needs to stay around for a long time. “It’s such an awesome experience. It’s addicting. It’s like a drug coming down Old Town Clovis and vaulting in front of 10,000 fans.” Greenman, competing for Team Clovis, came into the 30-person event at 15-0 and cleared it easily on his first attempt. He went 15-6 on his second trip down the elevated runway, then missed twice before clearing 16-0. Greenman bowed out after failing to clear 16-6 on three attempts. “During warm-ups, I was a little shaky,” Greenman said. “I’m used to the runway, but I was a little off at first. But once I got rolling, it felt good.”
