PUNE: The International Olympic Committee (IOC) vice-president and pole vault legend Sergey Bubka has given a gift of soothing words to the wrestling fraternity on the Olympic Day (June 23) celebrations. “The review of wrestling’s Olympic status has actually had a positive effect,” said the Ukrainian in an exclusive e-mail interview with TOI. “It took a very short period of time for the world of wrestling to unite in their intention to change for better. Much has been done already. I believe that the IOC along with FILA will find a solution to the problem which will benefit both wrestling and the Olympic Movement.” Wrestling will be a part of the Olympic Games in Rio in 2016 and it will come for voting this September for 2020 Games along with squash and baseball/softball. India had won three wrestling medals in last two Olympics. Bubka is also contesting for the IOC presidency. If he wins among six heavyweight candidates, it will be the first case of any legendary athlete leading the Olympic movement. more at Times of India
