After decades of service as a coach at Huntsville High School, former coach Doug Shaw was honored before Friday’s game. Shaw became the ninth entrant into the Huntsville Hornet Hall of Fame. “Being around these kids keep me young,” Shaw said. “I could not stand the thought of sitting in my La-Z-Boy all day long. I’ll keep going as long as I can stay here.” Shaw began his teaching and coaching career in 1974 and then became a varsity football and track and field. He was on the staff of Huntsville’s 1980 Class 4A football state championship team that was led by Hornets longtime coach Joe Clements. Also on that staff were fellow Hall of Honor coaches Jack Armstead and Trevor Fountain. Shaw eventually moved on from coaching to accept a position at Mance Park Middle School. Following a brief retirement, Shaw was lured back into coaching by former football head coach and athletic director Mitchell Coey. Shaw was on the staff for the 2007, ’08 and ’09 football teams that reached the state football playoffs. Shaw eventually stopped coaching football and served as an assistant in soccer, golf and was the boys’ track and field coach last spring. The longtime coach helped the girls golf team win a state championship and guided former Hornet Audie Wyatt to a state championship in the pole vault this past spring. more
