Great Britain –Andy Sutcliffe will be doing packing of a different kind in the next couple of days after being drafted into Great Britain’s European Championship squad. The Dukinfield-based pole vaulter is preparing to move house later this month. But that’s now on hold for the time being as he prepares to decamp to Gateshead and join his new British team-mates. Sale Harrier Sutcliffe, a former world junior bronze medalist, is a late call-up after British No.1 Steve Lewis withdrew with a shin problem. “I saw Steve had been named in the team last week so I was really shocked when I got the call,” said the Tameside star. “It will be my first proper senior vest so I am really excited. And it’s the first major outdoor meeting in this country since the Olympics, so I am sure that it will generate a lot of interest.” Sutcliffe, who meets his new team-mates today before the competition on Sunday, recently competed in the BT Great CityGames pole vault in Albert Square, clearing 5.25m. He followed that up earlier this month with 5.40m in Germany. “I am getting closer to the 5.50m to make the qualifying mark for the European Under-23 Championships,” explained Sutcliffe, who trains at Sportcity. “Hopefully, I can get it this weekend at such an important competition. If not, I have got the following weekend. “But we’re supposed to be moving a week on Friday so I’d rather get the standard on Sunday if possible.” Sutcliffe’s team-mates will include his former training partner Holly Bleasdale, the British No.1. more at Manchester Evening News
