GARDNER, KAN.—The parade, the demolition derby, and the plethora of craft submissions from local 4H-ers have been staples at the Johnson County Fair for years. Now, it seems, Gardner-Edgerton’s Street Vault pole vaulting competition can be counted among the Fair’s traditions. 2014 marked the fifth edition of the event and some have indicated it might have been the best one yet, featuring over 50 competitors. Jordan Scott, former pole vaulting standout at the University of Kansas, was among them. Scott won seven individual Big 12 Championships between indoor and outdoor track and field in his time at Kansas. “I’ve been to many street vaults and Gardner was one of the best set-ups out there. The runway was solid, the mats were large, there was a great crowd, and it was held in conjunction with a fair, which is excellent,” said Scott, who won the 2013 USA Indoor Championships. Scott, an Olympic hopeful, is not the Big 12 Champion to be featured in the event. Gardner-Edgerton alumni Kyle Wait (Kansas State University) and Casey Bowen (University of Kansas) have participated. more
