Lake Mary’s three-time girls state pole vault champion, Erica Sergeant, broke Florida’s 13-year-old high school record when she cleared 13-feet, 2¼-inches to win at a qualifying meet for AAU nationals at Bishop Snyder Catholic School in Jacksonville on Sunday. Sergeant conquered the record height on her third and final attempt to better a standard of 13-1¾ set in 2001 by 2012 U.S. Olympian Lacy Jansen of Sarasota Cardinal Mooney. “It felt so amazing,” she said. “It seems like my coach (Brian Cashman of Thin Air Vault Club) was even more excited than I was. He knows I’ve cleared that height in practice many a time. To finally get it in competition is so amazing.” Sergeant, who is headed to Kennesaw State (Ga.) on a track scholarship, was the only competitor to clear 12-feet in the 17-18 age group. She upped the bar to 12-7 and cleared that, then went for the record.  Sergeant’s previous best was 13-0, accomplished several times.
