Rick Attig could see it right away. Attig, now the pole vault coach at Nebraska, was coaching at Kansas at the time. Jenny Green was just out of her eighth grade year, and just beginning to learn how to pole vault. Her level of intensity was one thing,” Attig said. “There was no jumping and sitting down. She’d jump right back in line. When it came practice time, she was all business. You could definitely see the level of focus there. That was very refreshing compared to a lot of kids that might be in the camp.” Green, who just graduated from Grand Island Central Catholic, remembers that first camp as well. “That was one of the first camps I went to,” Green said. “It was a lot of fun. It was all new to me. Everything was interesting. I just wanted to try everything out. “Since I went there, I was hooked.” Green went on to become the best female pole vaulter the state of Nebraska has ever produced. She finished her prep career in May by winning her fourth straight all-class gold medal in the pole vault by setting a state-meet record of 13-feet. She barely missed on her third attempt at 13-51Ä4. A week earlier at districts, Green set the all-time state record of 13-3. That may be just a prelude to what she will accomplish after she joins Attig at Nebraska in the fall. “I always wanted to go to KU and vault under him there,” Green said. “He moved to Nebraska, so that worked out well.” Green also won the all-class gold at the state meet in the long jump with a school record leap of 19-21Ä2 on her last jump of the competition. She later added another Class B state title — and a runner-up finish for the all-class gold — in winning the 300-meter low hurdles. more at Independent.com
