After a star-studded career at East Forsyth High School, Sydney White entered Wake Forest as a freshman in 2012 and took a step sideways. She won four NCHSAA state championships in the pole vault at East and gained international experience with Team USA, but she didn’t pick up where she left off. Instead, White had to tear down everything she had learned about pole vaulting and start over. “Last year was just like not the freshman year I was expecting,” White said last week. “I got fifth in the (ACC indoor championships) but that was my only highlight. White, now a sophomore, set personal bests twice during the last weekend in May, clearing 13 feet, 9¼ inches with her final vault to finish 10th in the NCAA South Regional meet at North Florida in Jacksonville. The reward? A spot in the NCAA outdoor championships, which will start today and run through Saturday in Eugene, Ore. more
