California –It’s amazing what happens if an elementary school student takes in a high school track and field meet.

Last year while in Grade 8, Kyle Lewis stopped over at Delhi District Secondary School to watch track and field. While there, he saw Ty and Tessa Hamilton over at the pole vault pit. Ever since, he got the bug and finally got to try it for himself.

Now every time out, the 15-year-old is reaching new heights. And on Monday at DDSS, he captured the Norfolk Secondary School Athletic Association midget boys pole vault title.

“I started two weeks ago,” Lewis said. “It looked like a lot of fun. I really wanted to try it. I’ve always liked track and field and I like to jump.”

And for someone that likes to jump, pole vault is the perfect event.

During Monday’s pole vault events, Lewis set a personal best height of 2.70 metres to win.

“Today I did 2.70 m. I was pretty excited with that because at the school meet last week I jumped 2.50m,” Lewis said. “I had no idea what to expect. I wasn’t expecting this good. I was hoping for 2.60m today because I’ve been slowly getting better.”

It certainly is a long cry from his first day a couple of weeks ago.  more
