BATON ROUGE – Winning a third consecutive state championship in the pole vault was something Devin King of Jewel Sumner expected when he arrived at LSU’s Bernie Moore Stadium for the Louisiana High School Athletic Association Class 3A Track and Field State Championships. The stratosphere to which the Cowboys senior climbed was not quite a given, however. King eclipsed heights not previously achieved at any level of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association Track and Field State Championships in setting a composite record of 17 feet, 8 inches to win the Class 3A boys competition. King’s height represented the nation’s top vault this season, according to LHSAA meet officials. “When I was warming up, my vision was to go 17-3 and break the record,’’ King said. “Throughout the whole meet and jumping, I knew it was my goal and I wasn’t going home without it.’’ more
