Westby, Wisconsin –Records were made to be broken and that’s exactly what happened on Monday, April 21, when Austin Pasch and Bryce Galstad set two new Westby Area High School track records at the Prairie du Chien Invitational Westby junior Bryce Galstad also registered his name in the track and field record books soaring to 13-09 in the pole vault. Galstad’s vault was three inches higher than the record of 13-06 held since 2005, by JoJo Willis. After joining the team his freshman year on a whim, Galstad has been pushing himself to go higher and higher. He works on his upper body strength to give him lift and his leg strength to run the 80-meter approach. Teammate and friend, Jacob Rooney, challenges Galstad for the top spot in pole vault almost weekly. Rooney never lets Galstad forget to bring his “A” game.“Rooney is breathing down my back all the time and making me a better vaulter because of it,” Galstad said..Galstad vaulted at the state track and field meet in 2013 and is hoping for a return trip in 2014. He said the winning vault at state last year was 14 feet, a height he is striving hard to attain as the season progresses. He is currently ranked one of the top 10 pole vaulters in the state. more
