Cygan now even more motivated in vault

FREMONT, NB — Lincoln Southwest senior pole vaulter Karlye Cygan set the only meet record Friday at the Pat Murphy/Fremont Invitational by clearing 11 feet, 6 inches, sharing that honor with Columbus’ Kylee Study, who got the gold medal based on fewer misses.

But Cygan didn’t eclipse her personal record of 12-0 set last week at the Kearney Invitational, a mark that moved her into a tie for eighth on the girls all-time chart.

And that’s why the Nebraska recruit considered her latest performance a slight setback after setting personal records in her last two meets. She vaulted 11-8 at the Southwest Invitational two weeks ago.

“I didn’t prepare this week like I should have,” said Cygan, who knocked assistant LPS vault coach Lindsay Maher (former Centennial and NU vaulter) off the all-time chart with her 12-foot vault.

“I didn’t have that same drive because 12 foot was what I wanted this season,” Cygan added. “This was what I needed at this point of the season. This is motivation to go out and work harder.”  more
