Chicago, Ill — Marist’s Liam Henshaw contorted over the bar in the pole vault, taking care to not dislodge the bar from its precarious perch. As he fell to the large green and yellow pad at Hayward Field last May, he let the cheers of the spectators wash over him. Henshaw says he felt hyper-aware. He was able to focus on everything at once, from the necessary technique to clear 15 feet, 6 inches to the thousands of eyes watching him as he cleared the bar and fell back to earth. The moment his back hit the mat at the 2013 Class 5A state track and field championships, his state-meet record in the pole vault secured, Henshaw bounced up and sprinted back down the runway. He clenched his fist, smiled and then crossed himself, the crowd still cheering. “My favorite moment in my track history,” Henshaw says, now a senior. “Just having the crowd behind you just lifts you over that bar.” more
