Rapid City, SD –At this rate, there’s not much in terms of a ceiling on the potential of Sturgis pole vaulter Klara Lyon.
The Scoopers junior has set the school record in the event the last two weekends, clearing 11 feet, 7 inches to break Sturgis vault coach Kristi Cammack’s mark of 11-foot-6 two weekends ago at the Rapid City Developmental Meet before moving that up to 11-foot-10 at last weekend’s Queen City Track and Field Meet in Spearfish.
Lyon’s improvement has been impressive — she took third as a sophomore at last year’s Class AA state meet with a vault of 10 feet, 9 inches — but not unexpected.
“The first year (Cammack) started coaching, we made it to state and I jumped 9-9 at state my freshman year,” Lyon said. “She came up to me and said then, ‘I have big plans for you. You’re going to break my record by at least a foot.’ It’s just crazy to think that she saw that and that now we’re here.”
For her effort, Lyon is this week’s Rapid City Journal Athlete of the Week. more
