Burbank, California — Burroughs meet: Perhaps the highlight of the meet came when Indians pole vaulter Matt Schwartz set a school record with a vault of 15 feet, which was secured on his second attempt at the height. “I’m always looking for a personal record and I was actually hoping to get 15-6,” said Schwartz, who bested his previous personal best mark of 14-8.
Hillsboro, Illinois –Hillsboro High School senior Noah Calvert became the first Topper to clear 14 feet in the pole vault on Tuesday as he surpassed his own school record at a five team meet in Staunton. Calvert, who held the old mark of 13’6″, took first in the meet at Staunton and set a new benchmark for his discipline with the 14-feet even vault.
Grand Island, Nebraska–Kevin Cahoy reached a mark at the Kearney Indoor Meet that he hopes gives him confidence for the rest of the season. The Islander junior cleared 16-feet, which put him in a four-way tie for sixth on the All-time Nebraska pole vault charts. That mark leads the The Independent All-Area charts in the event. Last spring, Cahoy cleared 15-4 to finish second at the state meet to his older brother Steven, who is now vaulting at Nebraska. Cahoy cleared 14-6 at the Columbus Invitatational the following week. He said the Columbus Invite, which was the first outdoor meet the Islanders participated in, wasn’t his best performance. But he is still happy to reach 16-0 early in the season. “It’s a good mark to build on,” Cahoy said. “I didn’t perform my best the following week but I’m hoping throughout the season I keep on getting better off of that 16-0 mark.” GISH pole vault coach Clint Simmons said he isn’t surprised to see Cahoy having this early success in the season. “With working all through the year with going to a pole vault camp at Nebraska as well as working out at Hastings College during the winter and all the lifting he’s done, I couldn’t be happier with how he’s done,” he said. “He’s gotten so much quicker and stronger. He’s running down the runway a lot smoother than he has been in the past.” But Cahoy isn’t the only pole vaulter having success for the Islanders this season. Jake Morrow is second in the charts behind Cahoy at 14-0, while Austin Telecky is third at 13-6. The three went 1-2-3 at the Columbus this past weekend
