United Kingdom –PAUL Beswick has somersaulted to Gladiators glory, pole vaulted for England, wrestled in the US, won the Weakest Link, and forged a business partnership with Mr Universe. He’s not one to shout about it, though. “I’ve just been lucky,” he tells John Woodhouse. “HE got on because he was cheeky” – Paul Beswick’s mulling over his epitaph. But this is not a man generally given to pondering the end of days. In Paul’s world, life is lived to the full. And it’s an enthusiasm that’s infectious. He has, he casually informs me, got his postman running a marathon. Paul started out in unorthodox manner – and then never quite stopped. In his 80s youth, Birches Head High School was one of only two in Stoke-on-Trent to offer pole vault. For a young lad with a personality built on a triple bedrock of fitness, flamboyance, and fearlessness, it was a no-brainer. Making this most hair-raising of sports his own, he’d go on to represent his country.
