Apollo and Cortez – March 12, 2014

  • A meet of quality and quality    — practices next week
    • We had more vaulters than both teams combined
    • We have youth…building program
      • 19 vaulters and 5 upper classmen
      • 19 vaulters with 11 new vaulters (4th week)
      • At the end…who had most of the athletes left
        • So as the night wore on it was the MV 3 sophomores and Will versus a tall strong but unskilled Apollo kid.
        • Did you notice how much better your form was than theirs as a general rule
        • Students of this complex sport — students of the vault…you listen and work on skills
          • Problem is usually before the problem you see…Apollo going off to the right
          • Run was not a problem….new vaulters have that…most of you have moved beyond that
            • Speed amazing
            • Tall plants – notice how you were almost always down the middle
            • You were a team
              • I didn’t have to do much during warm up to get you on right steps, etc.  a lot of vaulters on the runway and you didn’t need a lot to get ready.
              • You enjoyed being with each other as a team…helpful to each other…sharing poles and cheering each other.
              • Conditions were pretty much perfect: good facility.  You were ready to go when called
              • 12 out of 18 of you tied or improved over last week.  Pretty amazing
              • Between Apollo and Thunderbird, you have seen the best vaulters in the district.  Where are you in ranking?
              • In this sport you can learn a lot about the sport and yourself in failure.

Individuals

  • Justin – Started at 6 and you didn’t think you could clear it….but you did!! Not bad for a first meet and only a very few practices. Need to work on a good step and the transition from carry to tall plant.
  • Rachel – last couple of vaulters were amazing…you had such a strong run and I thing gradually you are forgetting “bad” runs so we can focus on the swing.  I appreciated how you cheered on the team.
  • Sarah – I saw more and more confidence…. A stronger run and a taller plant and so very, very close now.  Things are coming together.  Need that effort in every vault every day.
  • Andy – not bad for coming off bronchitis.  Didn’t do any worse than last week. Your run was strong.  You are almost…almost there with a tall plant.  That is what we need to work on…Tall down the middle looking forward and up at the plant.
  • Daniella – Love the speed down the runway and the tall plant.  To me it’s obvious you just need a bit more time in the vault to work on a tall plant and swing.  You have great speed…that’s no problem.  Just some time gain more skills.  Tying your PR is not bad for the limited practice time.
  • Shaun—Mr. Talented frosh.  You have all the tools and that is the problem.  Everyone wants you in their event.  This event takes some time to learn and with just a little bit of work you will be stay the top frosh in Arizona and be on the road to state.
  • Marcus – it is obvious to me that you have the strength and speed to be a good vaulter.  You lack the time in the event.  This year you have been out for only a couple of practices. It showed.  But that will change as the number of practices goes up.  You need to work on consistency.  Your run is great.  Don’t change that.  But you do need to work over and over on the plant and swing.  The higher you go the more a little mistake at the bottom magnifies at the top.
  • Casey – your run keeps getting stronger and stronger.  Your plant is tall.  Everything is falling into place.  Now need to work on swing and turn.  But you are right on schedule and improving all the time.
  • Lilie – Things are going so well.  You are running faster and moving up the pole.  Still a little work on planting sooner but that problem is fading fast.  Now turn…turn..turn. And I like how you are there for the other vaulters.
  • Josiah – It may not have happened in the height recorded but I liked what you are doing skillwise.  Your run is now very fast and strong.  Your plant is tall and early often.  And you are a practice or two away from mastering the push with the left arm and the swing.  Right on schedule.
  • Mitchell – You don’t look like a new vaulter…until you do.  Your run is usually very fast and strong and you have a tall plant but then sometimes you slow down to make sure that plant is good and you look like a new vaulter.  You show so much potential and are really getting high…need to be consistent with the plant and work on the swing and turn.  I expect things to come together quickly.
  • Connor – amazing… a two foot increase in a week.  By the end of the season you will be setting a world record.  The big reason is that very fast run…awesome indicator of your future.  And your plant is always right down the center line. But after that…ugh.  Need to work on the swing and turn.
  • Anthony – lots of fun coaching you.  You seem to be having such a good time and that is what the vault should be about…fun.  Run is awesome.  Plant is tall.  Swing needs work as does the turn.  Right on schedule though and we know what to work on.
  • Christian – Life is in distance.  So we don’t see you much.  But last night you put on a show with a good run…good plant too.  And often a good swing.  Need some more work on that swing and turn.  You are doing very well.
  • Dylan S. – You know you probably have the best skills next to our superstar.  You have a great run and generally a good plant…although we know some work needed there…nice swing and you have the turn down.  It’s time to move up that pole and fly high.  The reason I hesitate is that you swing immediately off the ground rather than jump and then swing.  You need to get a bit deeper in the pit consistently to move up.  So that is what we need to work on.  You are on track to be a state contender.
  • Dylan G. – where did this guy come from. Last year you were flopping all over the pit…usually of the right side.  This year your plant is right down the middle after a very, very fast run.  We just need to work on a perfect swing using your arms properly so you fly off the top of your pole.  Your speed makes it easy to move up the pole…add the technique and will you be high!!!
  • Petey – You have proven to be a natural.  Almost immediately you got the run and plant down.  That is supposed to take lots of time.  Because of that you are getting way up there.  Still need some work on the swing and using the arms right.  You picked up the turn quickly but need to work on throwing your hands away.  So…work on those skills and keep moving up the pole and this is going to be an amazing first year.
  • Will – I can only say we all admire you. Waiting for ever to compete and not having any competition.  Trying to reach another level in practice when everyone else is working on beginning skills.  Coming off an injury that would stop anyone.  You are amazing.  Skill work:  early plant; active hands in swing; stay close to pole up top and move up poles.  You are already a superstar.
  • Practices next week – Tuesday 10 am; Wednesday 2 pm; Thursday 10 am
  • Today…work on skills:  pop-ups – plant; swing; turn; high bar; vault trainer
