Chesapeake vaults into prominence

When former Chesapeake track coach Tara Witmer took over the track program from Skip Lee, she embraced a goal he had set to enhance the field portion of the Cougar track and field team. “Coach Lee started that and he started the program, really,” Witmer said. “He said there were points out there to be had and it would give kids the opportunities to try new things. Then, kids would get good at it and other kids see that and want to try it. They want to succeed and they are very dedicated.” Building off that premise, Chesapeake developed into a power in the field events, even winning a Boys Class 4A Central region title in 2011, scoring 48 of 64 points in the field events to defeat Annapolis, 64-51. One particular event tended to lend itself to success at the state level, and that was the pole vault. Starting at the 2012 indoor track state championships, Chesapeake has won six state titles in the pole vault.  more
