KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee track and field greats Joetta Clark Diggs and Tim Mack have both enjoyed hall of fame weeks. Clark Diggs, sister of director of track and field/cross country J.J. Clark, was enshrined on Tuesday night into the New Jersey Hall of Fame. She was a nine-time national champion at Tennessee from 1981-84 and later became a four-time Olympian in the 800 meters. Mack is being inducted this weekend into the UCS Pole Vault Summit Hall of Fame. The UT All-American is best remembered for winning the gold medal in the pole vault at the 2004 Olympic Games. Former Vol pole vaulter Tim Mack is one of three members of the pole vaulting community being inducted into the hall of fame at the 2014 Pole Vault Summit this weekend in Sparks, Nevada.
Mack is a former Olympian who won the 2004 gold medal in Athens, Greece, by setting a persona l– and then-Olympic — record with a 19 feet, 6 ½ inch (5.95 meters) jump on his third attempt.
Mack, a native of the Cleveland, Ohio, area, transferred to UT after spending two seasons at Malone College (Ohio). While competing for the Vols, Mack secured All-American honors as a junior and senior, including after his 1994 senior season, thanks to a vault of 18-0 ½ to place fifth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships held at Boise State.
After his Olympic success, Mack now trains at the Johnny Long Training Academy in Knoxville, where he runs clinics, as well as coaches private and group lessons.
